NORVILA | Harmony of Concrete in the Nordic Landscape
01. Project Introduction
NORVILA in Trondheim represents a powerful testament to residential architecture that challenges and simultaneously respects the wild nature of Scandinavia. Positioned on terrain with pronounced slope and surrounded by a dense pine forest, this 300 m² villa is designed to maximize panoramic views and resist the harsh Nordic climate.
The architectural concept is based on the play of cascading residential volumes, where the massiveness of exposed concrete is elegantly broken by the warmth of vertical wooden facade and the sharp lines of single-pitch roofs.

03. Design Characteristics and Topographic Integration
Within an area of 300 m², the project distributes living functions across several tiered levels, following the natural form of the hillside:
Cascading Structure and Monumental Stairs: The building is anchored to the rock through a solid concrete base. A long series of external concrete stairs, equipped with minimal metal railings, follows the contour of the villa and connects different terrace levels with the parking area.
Duality of Materials (Concrete & Wood): The lower part and load-bearing structures are dominated by architectural exposed concrete, which conveys security and durability. The upper levels are clad with wooden panels in warm tones and horizontal black grilles, creating a visual dialogue with the surrounding trees.
Epic Terraces and Asymmetric Roofs: Single-pitch roofs (shed roofs) create high ceilings in the interior and give the building a dynamic silhouette. Wide terraces surrounded by thin steel railings function as viewing platforms over the magnificent landscape.
04. Architectural Vision
"With NORVILA we wanted to capture the true spirit of Norwegian architecture: complete integration into nature without hiding the human hand. Concrete gives the house the character of a rock, while wood and large windows make it a warm and welcoming shelter."
Orientation Toward Landscape: Large glass windows on each level are strategically positioned to capture the scarce northern light and bring the forest inside the house.
Protection and Performance: The choice of materials and roof design were made considering heavy snow loads and strong winds, ensuring high thermal insulation and efficiency.
Tiered Privacy: The reorganization into levels ensures that living areas have direct access to large terraces, while bedrooms remain protected and intimate.
